Remember that sunny perfect day last year? The sun was shining, you were having so much fun at the beach, having a BBQ, or maybe exploring a local park. And then you thought, “It’s not that hot, I don’t really need sunscreen."

That evening, your skin told a different story. It was red, hot, and stinging!

We've all been there, or know someone who has...

The Australian sun is no joke. The UV (ultraviolet) levels here are some of the highest in the world, and even a few hours of unprotected exposure can lead to sunburn, skin damage, and an increased risk of skin cancer.

That’s why as you gear up for another beautiful Australian summer, it’s time to make sure you’re fully prepared.

Here’s a quick guide for you.

1. Broad-spectrum protection: Your go-to option.

Look for a sunscreen labeled “broad-spectrum.” This means it protects against both UVA and UVB rays. UVA rays are responsible for skin aging and long-term damage, while UVB rays cause sunburn. A broad-spectrum sunscreen ensures you’re covered on both fronts.

2. SPF Levels: What do you really need?

The Sun Protection Factor (SPF) measures how well sunscreen shields your skin from UVB rays. In Australia, SPF 30 or higher is recommended. SPF 30 blocks about 97% of UVB rays, while SPF 50 blocks 98%.

  • Best For Everyday Use: SPF 30

  • Best For Outdoor Adventures: SPF 50 or higher, especially if you’re spending extended time in the sun.

3. Water-resistant sunscreens: A must for active days

If you’re swimming, exercising, or sweating, water-resistant sunscreen is essential. It stays effective longer, even when exposed to water, but remember to reapply every two hours—or immediately after swimming.

4. Mineral vs. Chemical Sunscreens

  • Mineral Sunscreens: Contain natural ingredients like zinc oxide or titanium dioxide. They sit on the skin's surface and reflect UV rays, making them great for sensitive skin.

  • Chemical Sunscreens: Absorb UV rays and convert them into heat. These tend to be lightweight and invisible, making them perfect for daily use under makeup.

5. Sunscreens for Kids and sensitive skin

Children’s skin is more delicate and requires extra protection. Look for gentle, fragrance-free formulas designed for kids or sensitive skin. Our pharmacy offers a range of options specifically for little ones.
